Organized Solid Waste Collection

On Thursday, January 23, 2020, the City of Anoka held an Open House at Green Haven Golf Course and Event Center from 6 to 8 pm to present information on Organized Solid Waste Collection and answered questions from those present.

Below is information on the topic, plus links to download our Feedback Form, or take the online survey, view the Organized Collection Process Flowchart, slideshow presentation, and the video produced by QCTV of the presentation at the Open House.

Citizen Involvement

City residents are encouraged to either take the brief survey or complete a Feedback Form and submit it to City Hall by end of day, Wednesday, February 12, 2020. Staff will then compile the information and prepare it in a report for the City Council to review at its Worksession on Monday, February 24, 2020.

As directed by the City Council in October of 2019, city staff researched and compiled information regarding organized solid waste collection.

Minnesota Statute §115A.94 Subdivision 1

"Organized Collection" means a system for collecting solid waste in which a specified collector, or a member of an organization of collectors, is authorized to collect from a defined geographic service area or areas some or all of the solid waste that is released by generators for collection.

Anoka currently has open solid waste collection; a system in which all garbage haulers licensed by the city may service any or all sections of the city.

This topic was discussed back in 2014 and 2015, at which time it was determined to remain with the open hauling system based on discussions and feedback received. Now, the topic is being reconsidered, in part, due to the condition of our city streets and the investments made for them in recent years.

Presentation Information

The presentation information included:

  • The process that must be followed when considering organized solid waste collection
  • Impacts to city streets, residential rates, and the environment
  • Pros, cons, and myths of organized solid waste collection
  • Other ways to reduce impacts on streets, noise, environment, safety, and traffic

Citizen feedback on this subject is important! You can choose to either complete the survey (linked below) or complete the feedback form (which you can fill in online, be sure to rename and save, and email back or print, complete and mail, deliver, or fax) linked below and submit it by end of day, Wednesday, February 12, 2020. You may also stop by City Hall to fill out a form, available at the front desk.
